The translation was a bit jarring, I could definitely tell this was translated from German. Being bilingual Dutch/German, it took my out the story a couple of times: I started to reconstruct the German instead of trying to meditate on the teachings.
It’s a great book for people who already have some theological formation and want to delve deeper into exegesis. It’s not recommended for novices, since Ratzinger assumes that the reader already knows the tenets of Catholicism.
It’s a very kerygmatic read, which doesn’t really appeal to me, since I’m more practical. Ratzinger explains how things work, I’m interested in how to apply it.
Aside from that, a nice book overall, but a bit too academic to my taste. Three stars.
